Main Street becomes a walking street for three days in the middle of August. If you have lived in Port Dover for more than a summer, you already know the rhythm. If you have not thought much about it beyond a vague "the crafts thing," this is a short guide to using the week well.
The anchor is Art in the Park, but the real change is the street
For more than 40 years Powell Park has been the focal point the third weekend in August for Summer Festival, Art in the Park, held this year on August 16 and 17 from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. Saturday and 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Sunday, organized by the Port Dover Board of Trade. That much is on every listings page. The part worth flagging for anyone who lives close to downtown: Main Street is closed from Chapman Street West to Market Street East for the duration, turning the core into a pedestrian shopping mall.
That closure is the difference between a craft fair you drive to and a weekend that changes how the town feels. Concurrent with the park, the Summer Festival's "Main Street Market" sidewalk sales run August 15, 16 and 17 in downtown Port Dover, with All Over Dover end-of-season sales at the same time. If you have been meaning to actually look inside three or four Main Street shops you always mean to visit, this is the weekend the browsing is easy.
A few resident-useful specifics under the tents in Powell Park:
- The used book fair is the sleeper attraction. Organizers collect donations for weeks beforehand, stockpiling thousands of texts across cookbooks, history, fantasy, mystery, and more. Keen readers typically arrive early to pick over the pile, so don't delay if you want to see everything.
- First Port Dover Scouts serve warm food and cold drinks in the park, including hamburgers, hot dogs, and pancakes, and there is a candy floss trailer that was added after years of requests.
- Antiques, used books, and live music share the park with the craft vendors.
The week around it, not just the weekend
The festival gets top billing, but Port Dover is quietly stacked from Thursday through Sunday. Treating the week as a single block is more useful than picking one item.

Over at the theatre, Lighthouse Festival's world premiere run of Liars at a Funeral is in Port Dover from July 29 through August 15, which means the last performances land right against the sidewalk-sales weekend. If you have visitors coming down for Art in the Park, that Saturday evening is quietly the best-programmed night the town has all summer.
After the tents come down
The busy weekend is genuinely useful for out-of-town family. It is not the best window if you actually want to see the local art scene. That opens up the Wednesday and Thursday after, when the park is empty again and the galleries are back to their normal pace.
A short walk from the harbour to Main Street, in the order it makes sense to do it:
Port Dover Harbour Museum, 44 Harbour Street. The museum's featured exhibit from July to September showcases works by folk artist Thurcil Church and his decoy carving. Curator Katie Graham describes the museum's focus as the local commercial fishing industry and heritage. It is open Wednesday to Saturday from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Free admission, which most residents forget to mention when a friend asks what to do on an overcast Saturday.
Cabin 519, 114 Main Street. Owner Pam Schneider says the shop features works by roughly 40 artists, the majority of them local, with some regional artists as well. The mix includes pottery, paintings, hooked rugs, leather purses and slippers, knitting, candles, photo and art cards, fused glass, locally featured books, copper and silver jewellery, tea towels, and honey. Cabin 519 is open seven days a week from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m.
Woodhouse Gallery and the Lighthouse Theatre galleries round out the year-round options. Port Dover's art scene steps up during summer and fall, with a mix of arts and crafts at Cabin 519, Woodhouse Gallery, and Lighthouse Theatre galleries alongside Open Studios, Summer Festival, the Norfolk Studio Tour, and year-round art and photography at the Harbour Museum.
One thing that surprises people who move here from bigger cities: three of the four things above are on the same six-block loop. You can do the museum, the gallery on Main Street, and a coffee in ninety minutes.
What comes next, before the season closes
Late August is not the end of it. A few dates worth putting in the calendar now:
- A Woman's Love List by Norm Foster at Lighthouse Theatre, Port Dover August 26 through September 12. This is the "after the tourists leave" show, and locals tend to have an easier time getting seats than they do for the July openers.
- Norfolk Studio Tour. A number of Port Dover artists participate in the Lynnwood Arts Norfolk Studio Tour, planned for September 27 and 28 from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m., with an exhibit of artists' works at Lynnwood Arts Centre in Simcoe from September 11 to December 13.
- Port Dover Beerstock. Beerstock 2026 is at Silver Lake in Port Dover on Saturday, September 26, from 11 a.m.
- Get Down Tonight: The Ultimate 70's Soundtrack. The season topper is on stage at the Lighthouse Theatre starting Tuesday, September 15 at 2 p.m.
If you are the kind of household that treats early September as "back to normal," it is worth knowing the town is genuinely programmed through October. The quiet season in Port Dover is a shorter window than most people assume when they buy here.
A note for hosts
The single most-asked question I get from people who have lived in Port Dover for under two years, when they have out-of-town friends coming the third weekend of August: is it worth staying in town or driving somewhere. The honest answer is stay. Held at the same time as Art in the Park, Main Street Market Sidewalk Sale Days at Port Dover businesses are also popular with visitors, and the pedestrian-mall version of Main Street only exists three days a year. You can drive to Simcoe or Turkey Point any other weekend of the summer.
Park the car early, walk from home if you can, and eat somewhere on Harbour Street once the park closes at 5 or 6. The town is doing something it does exactly once a year. Use it.
